Heritage

Sightseeing

Saffelberg Castle, also known as Oplombeek Castle, is a neo-Baroque building. The castle was first mentioned in the early 18th century and was then inhabited by the Wouters family. On 17 January 1843, heir Karel-Jozef Wouters was appointed mayor of Gooik by King Leopold I, an office he would hold for 35 years.

In 1906 the castle passed to Baron Filips van Oldeneel tot Oldenzeel. He demolished the castle and erected the current French Renaissance-style buildings. The castle was for a long time inhabited by Baron Etienne van oldeneel tot Oldenzeel and his sister, Baroness Marie.

Since 2006, Saffelberg Investments has been housed in the castle.

A nice eye catcher at 6 km from Trionfo.
